The First 1,000 Days...

The first 1,000 days of life are critical for laying the foundations of health for the rest of our life, both mentally and physically.

Your baby’s gut microbiome is a key part of this development – it is kickstarted the moment your baby is born and develops in response to their environment to support immune and digestive development.

We know the gut is central to health and that more than 70% of our immune cells are found here, so it is important to be able to easily identify what's happening with your baby - and one key way of checking is by keeping track of nappies – are they happy or crappy?

Keeping track of what’s going on in their nappy is a useful way to help understand your baby’s behaviour and any symptoms they might be experiencing – with their digestion, elimination, immunity, skin and mood. Happy nappies are linked to happy babies.

And friendly bacteria, that’s been specifically selected for and researched with babies from birth, can be part of their routine from the get-go to complement their natural gut microbes and help keep their nappies happy from birth.

"BEHIND EVERY BUNDLE OF JOY IS A BUNDLE OF NAPPIES"

Is your baby's nappy happy?

A happy nappy can appear in many different consistencies and colours, depending on what your baby is eating. Look out for constipation and/or diarrhoea, but don’t panic when you see one colour or even consistency one day and another the next.

Babies are developing so fast and respond to changes quickly, so a change in what mum is eating can impact breast fed babies stools, an increase or decrease in the amount a formula-fed baby has 'eaten' one day can have an effect, and as we introduce solid foods, the changes in stool colour, form, regularity and ease can vary daily (and maybe even throughout an individual day).

Talking about what’s in your baby’s nappy becomes a whole thing as a new parent. Are they peeing enough? Are their stools yellow, green, orange or brown? Are they watery or solid? How often are they pooping? Is it projectile poo? And what about the notorious ‘poonami’?!

Our simple guide can help to quickly identify what might have caused the frothy green substance in your baby's nappy, or the sudden orange and green tinge.

From the expert

Adrienne Benjamin, Nutritionist at ProVen Biotics, adds: "Becoming a parent brings both extreme joy and increased stress. We find ourselves delighted every day by the tiniest new thing that our baby does - at the same time as worrying about what is 'normal' and what needs further attention."

"And 'normal' nappy contents seems to be a stressor for the majority of new parents. I have three (now grown-up) sons, and remember that talking (and worrying!) about the contents of my babies' nappies became an almost daily pastime for periods, particularly in the first year of my first son's life."

"Normalising conversations and sharing stories around this subject can be particularly helpful for new parents, which is where the idea of Happy Nappies came from."
